Initiating an OGC Shibboleth Interoperability Experiment

Along with our fellow OGC members; Cadcorp and EDINA, we've initiated an OGC Web Services (OWS) Shibboleth Interoperability Experiment (IE) to advance best practice for implementing standards on federated security in transactions involving geospatial data and services.

The IE will demonstrate use of Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) with OGC Web Services, including use of Shibboleth. This IE will build on practices from the European Spatial Data Infrastructure Network (ESDIN) project and on results from previous OGC initiatives on authentication.

Want to join us?

The OGC have opened a call for participation in the experiment and the registration deadline is 30 September 2010.

For more information and to register, see here:

Here at Snowflake, we're proud of our close working relationship with the OGC and have been involved in several OGC testbeds including the most recent, OWS-7 Aviation thread.

OWS-7 AIM Architecture

Hopefully, you've seen our recent press announcement about our involvement in the recent FAA and EUROCONTROL sponsored Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) testbed?

If not take a look: Snowflake Software delivers first practical implementation of new OGC standard.

This 10 minute video takes a look in more depth at Snowflake's involvement and the overall AIM architecture. Whilst it focuses on the Aviation industry, the principles behind the data exchange can be applied in any industry, due to the standards based approach of the technology within the architecture.

A team from Snowflake Software has successfully demonstrated the first practical implementation of the upcoming OGC WFS-T 2.0 specification within the aviation strand of the OGC OWS-7 testbed.

Web Feature Service and eventing

Working to real life flight dispatch scenarios (disruption due to volcanic ash and snow), Snowflake effectively demonstrated the powerful capability of GO Publisher to retrieve and update data in real-time via web services (WFS and eventing). Deployed in a secure, distributed IT infrastructure where interoperability and on demand, 24/7 performance are key, Snowflake’s GO Publisher was used to serve aeronautical (AIXM 5.1) and weather (WXXM 1.1) data to dispatchers and pilots in real-time.

Snowflake also demonstrated the flexibility and productivity of GO Loader to transform and load aeronautical and weather data provided in a wide range of schema to produce a single authoritative aeronautical data store which underpinned the project.

The results

The full results have been published by the OGC in the following engineering reports: http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/per,
as well as a set of informative videos to support the findings of the testbed: http://www.opengeospatial.org/pub/www/ows7/index.html

The OGC have also announced they will be holding webinars to present the results. The webinars will be held on Thursday 19 August and Wednesday 8 September and more details can be found on their website: http://www.opengeospatial.org/event/ows7webinars .

Melissa Burns, Marketing Manager commented:

The additional features that the new standard adds to GO Publisher means that as well as being an INSPIRE compliant Web Feature Service, users can perform temporal or stored queries on the data in real-time, enhancing the web service for end users - something many organisations rely on for operational effectiveness and business continuity.

Melissa added;

We recently unveiled the upcoming release of GO Publisher (including the WFS-T 2.0 technology) at the INSPIRE conference and anyone who would like to trial the latest technology should request a copy of the pre-release version.”
