In order to increase capacity whilst at the same time improve safety, a change towards Systems Wide Information Management (SWIM) and the delivery of a common and accurate situational awareness is required by all organisations involved in Air Traffic Management (ATM). Two initiatives are key to delivering this goal, within Europe the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research (SESAR) programme and within the United States the NextGen programme.

To achieve common situational awareness both programmes place a strong emphasis on the adoption of interoperable and standards based Data eXchange. As a result, Eurocontrol and the FAA have developed a number of 'exchange models' to establish a framework for information sharing. Two such exchange models are:

  • Aeronautical Information Exchange Model (AIXM)
  • Weather Information Exchange Model (WXXM)

Based on the Geography Markup Language (GML), AIXM and WXXM are designed to enable the management and distribution of Aeronautical Information Services (AIS) and Weather information in digital format.

Snowflake Software is a UK based company, with a strong background in providing 'Commercial off the Shelf (COTS)' software to facilitate data exchange. Since its inception in 2001, Snowflake has built a reputation in enterprise data exchange using Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and ISO standards. Primarily focused on the National Mapping and Data Provider markets, Snowflake has developed solutions, expertise and knowledge to manage data exchange challenged with complex data models and large data volumes.

Snowflake is committed to the ATM market and has applied its unique expertise and experience to develop an Aviation solution to Load AIXM5, Publish AIXM5 & AIXM5.1 and Visualise AIM information in Google and Bing maps. Together these solutions enable the move towards SWIM using proven, mature and enterprise COTS software.
